Sometimes you just don't have it in you to meditate or exercise or do much of anything.  You need an escape - an armchair escape.  Television and movies can transport you to another world.  And yet, although at times television and movies can be an escape, at times they can help you tune in:  as a witness of even something scripted, it can help you develop a language for your own experiences.  It can help you experience empathy and see things in a new light; it can help you develop insight and appreciation for the world around you.  It can help you learn.  It can be something that gives your mood a boost, or it can meet you in the depths of your anxiety and despair. 

As with all things, the key is moderation.  While there are times when a movie or a tv show can be a good thing, too much can suck you into a pattern of inertia.  Sometimes restriction of your television viewing is just as necessary as the escape.
